Nicholas Sparkles: How to Accessorize Like Your Favorite Sparks Heroine

A leading lady wouldn’t be complete without her accessories.

Since February is synonymous with candy hearts and Nicholas Sparks movies, it’s only fitting that we take a look at jewelry statements from Sparks’ beloved heroines.

1. Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams)

Set in the 1940’s South, The Notebook depicts the romance of Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) and Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams). Growing up wealthy, Allie’s style is pristine and refined even in a post–Great Depression time period of war. “I was influenced by the war effort in a lot of [the costumes], but in Allie’s specific case I was not. She comes from a very wealthy family and the social implications did not lean towards patriotism but status,” says Karyn Wagner, the film’s costume designer.

Throughout the film Allie accessorizes with strands of pearls and classic diamonds such as her diamond engagement ring. “In the ’40s a young woman would receive pearls as a sweet sixteen present if her family could afford them. Officially they spoke of her arrival to womanhood,” Wagner says.

Even though it’s not the ring Allie ends up with (spoiler alert!), her engagement ring from wealthy Lon becomes an important symbol in the film. “The director wanted it to be very opulent—the kind of ring that her true love could afford. It was a statement about social status and power,” Wagner says.

2. Ronnie Miller (Miley Cyrus)

In The Last Song (the film which sparked Cyrus’ romance with now fiancé Liam Hemsworth), teenage protagonist Ronnie Miller has a rebellious edge. Contrary to Allie’s classic statements, her accessories are trendy and bohemian, reflecting her personality, youth, and the movie’s modern setting. Throughout the movie Ronnie wears layers of karma bead bracelets as well as a symbolic pendant and bulky silver rings.

3. Savannah Curtis (Amanda Seyfried)

Soft-spoken and intellectual Savannah wears delicate pieces throughout Dear John, a modern look at lovers separated by war. The gold heart pendant she wears reflects the film’s theme as well as the Savannah’s demure persona. “Amanda Seyfried and I collaborated and developed her character for the film Dear John by first agreeing we both believe in true love, its pureness, and love’s simplicity,” says costume designer Dana Campbell. “Savannah, a South of Broad Charlestonian, would never let her jewelry nor her clothes wear her.”

If Channing Tatum were my love interest I’d want to wear my heart on my sleeve too.

For even more sparkle, check out Sparks’ latest film adaptation Safe Haven out this Valentine’s Day. And be sure to look for a scene where Alex’s (Josh Duhamel) daughter creates jewelry. “Lexie, Alex’s daughter likes to make things so we thought it would be cute for her to make her dad a DADDY bracelet that Josh wears throughout the film,” costume designer Leigh Leverett tells JCK. “Once Lexie warms to Katie [Julianne Hough] and she starts to become one of the family, she makes Katie a KATIE bracelet which Julianne wore through the rest of the film.” (Aww!) I don’t know about you, but I can’t say no to a good chick flick.
