Rare Burmese Ruby Pieces Lead Christie’s Hong Kong Auction

A “pigeon’s blood” Burmese ruby necklace and earrings highlight the upcoming Christie’s Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels auction on Nov. 27.

The ruby and diamond necklace—which was designed by 2012 Best in Show Spectrum Award winner James W. Currens for Faidee—includes 26 graduated oval-shape rubies weighing between 1.27 and 5.38 cts., accented by a cluster of marquise- and pear-shape diamonds. It carries a $3.5 million–$5.5 million estimate.

The Currens-designed earrings, titled the Red Butterflies, each feature more than 7 cts. t.w. of Burmese rubies and carry a $2.5 million–$3.5 million estimate.

The sale also features:

  • A pair of pear-shape diamond and pearl earrings from the Golconda mine in India. To find such a well-matched pair from Golconda is an uncommon, the auction house notes. One stone is 6.76 cts., the other 6.06 cts. (Estimate: $1.2 million–$1.9 million)

  • A  36.58 ct. fancy brown diamond ring. (Estimate: $1 million–$1.5 million)
