Closing Texas Jeweler Hosts Cash Mob

On July 14, Kennedy’s Jewelers—a store located in Nacogdoches, Texas, for the past 67 years—welcomed customers to a two-hour cash mob event featuring door prizes and sales.

The Nacogdoches Convention and Visitors Bureau hosted the event, which encourages the community to shop at local stores.

“It was based off the idea of a flash mob, where hundreds of people show up on the street to dance,” says Mark Stephens, whose grandfather opened the store originally. “Instead, they show up to shop.”

The event comes on the heels of Kennedy’s announcement that it will close its doors in August. “Times have changed,” Stephens says. “Young people’s way of buying jewelry has changed,”

Customers attended the cash mob to show respect for the store. “We did have a good turn-out, even though it was raining,” he says. “We’ve been here a long time. The community has been good to us and the store has been good to our family.”
