Fancy That

Your eyes do not deceive you: These Harry Winston diamond drops feature one fancy intense blue and one fancy intense yellowish orange diamond. And they are not as rare as you might think. This is the fourth magnificently mismatched set of ear pendants Christie’s has sold in the past three years; one pair fetched nearly $1.5 million. “The rarest colored diamonds now command more per carat than colorless diamonds,” explains Daphne Lingon, senior vice president of jewelry for Christie’s Americas. The platinum-set earrings—“a classic Harry Winston cluster design,” Lingon says—also incorporate another unique element: a detachable pendant. “They can be worn by day with the diamond cluster only, or fully intact with those magnificent pendants for evening functions or special events,” she says. For the buyer who paid $398,500 for the pair at Christie’s New York Magnificent Jewels sale on April 12, that makes them something of a value.
