Million-Dollar Theft Shakes Baselworld

Thieves stole millions in diamonds from a vendor at the Baselworld show March 30, reports say.

Three men were able to break into a diamond trader’s display and steal gems while others distracted company employees, according to reports quoting the local prosecutor’s office. The local authorities have reportedly turned the theft over to Interpol.

The brazen theft sent shockwaves through the fair and temporarily forced the closure of one of its exhibit halls, attendees tells JCK.

The press department at Baselworld did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

Three years ago, thieves stole $800,000 worth of gems at the show, in what was then considered the largest theft in the show’s history.
