N.Y. Diamond District Promotes Japan Relief

Firenze Jewels in New York City is teaming up with the New York City 47th Street Business Improvement District and 2,600 other businesses in the area to support relief in aiding the victims of the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan March 11.

“We asking jewelers to donated $1 for every sale to the American Red Cross Japanese Earthquake Relief Fund,” Michael Grumet, executive director of the New York City 47th Street Business Improvement District, tells JCK.

The initiative launched March 17 and will run through the end of April.

“We encourage all jewelers to make a check out to the American Red Cross Japanese Earthquake Relief Fund and we’ll be glad to forward them on through the District, so the industry can react as a whole,” Grumet says.

Grumet wouldn’t specify how many retailers were getting involved but says, “We’re getting a very positive response.”
