GIA MUSEUM FEATURES GIANT GEMSTONES

The Gemological Institute of America opened a new exhibit, “Giant Gemstones and Colossal Crystals,” in December in the Museum Gallery at the institute’s world headquarters in Carlsbad, Calif.

Among the extraordinary pieces on display is one of the world’s largest single amethyst crystals. On loan to GIA from Hussain Rezayee, this doubly terminated crystal weighs 164 lbs.

The new exhibit, which features information about the rarity, formation, and origin of such sizable specimens, consists of pieces from the Harvard Mineralogical Museum, several private collections, and GIA’s own collection.

The “Giant Gemstones and Colossal Crystals” exhibit will remain on display through Spring 2001. For public viewing hours and more information about GIA and upcoming museum exhibits, contact Laurie Stein at (800) 421-7250, ext. 4033, or visit the GIA Web site at www.gia.edu.
