Louis Nchindo is the former managing director of Debswana and a former director of De Beers. A while ago, he was charged with corruption in Botswana. His trial has been filled with embarrassing revelations for De Beers and the former government of Botswana, including the revelation that De Beers loaned money 20 years ago to the former President upon his retirement, and donated money to the ruling party. Here is one local press account of Nchindo’s former role.
And now Nchindo is said to be missing, and, according to some accounts, dead.
UPDATE: De Beers confirms his death and offers this statement:
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Louis Goodwill Nchindo, the former representative of the De Beers Group in Botswana. During his 30 year career, which started at Anglo American Corporation, followed by De Beers, and lastly Debswana, Louis Nchindo became a leading figure in the global diamond industry. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, children and grandchildren during these very difficult times.
