Up to 500,000 in jewelry stolen from dealer

An antique jewelry dealer had as much as $500,000 worth of jewelry stolen from her car April 3 when she stopped to visit a friend in Merrick, N.Y., Nassau County police reportedly said.

The woman, 44 and from Staten Island, had reportedly been at an antiques show at a local High School and went to her friend’s home nearby about 6:30 p.m., police told Newsday.

She reportedly left her jewelry in a gray canvas suitcase in her car, a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe, which was parked in front of the house. About an hour later, she discovered that her car window had been broken and the items, worth from $300,000 to $500,000, had been taken.

Detectives believe the woman was targeted but so far have no proof that she was followed from the antiques show, the newspaper reports.
