Up Close and Personal With Jewelry Designer Lauren Sigman

If you concentrate hard enough, you can almost catch the sweet scent of flowers wafting from Lauren Sigman’s showroom on JCK Marketplace. Her sweet, feminine designs are abundant with the blooming motif, and the resulting pieces are fun, feminine, and, well, flowery! I had the privilege of learning more about Lauren Sigman through our Q&A, below. Meet the woman who, like me, enjoys a little color on the walls, and isn’t afraid of moving in a new direction. In fact, Lauren took a chance to go forward with what she loved, and came up smelling like (what else?) roses.

JCK Marketplace: Briefly, tell me a little bit about your history.

Lauren Sigman: My father always told me, “Unless you’re overwhelmingly great at something, go to law school.” Think Lance Armstrong and cycling. I rebelled by going to business school instead and spent 20 years in the corporate world. Corporate life treated me well, but I was dying creatively. I was inspired to follow my love of jewelry design after reading an article by magazine editor Kate White on moving forward. After studying metalsmithing, I put together my first collection in 2010, entitled Life in Color. It was a natural fit that the collection would be centered around my love of color and flowers.

JCK Marketplace: If you could sum up the Lauren Sigman brand in just a few words, which would you choose?

LS: Happy, colorful, flowers, beautiful, and timeless.

Lauren Sigman Bird of Paradise earrings JCK Marketplace: What is your favorite piece from your Marketplace showroom and why?

LS: It would have to be my Bird of Paradise diamond and amethyst earrings. I love them because they have all the details that I love in a piece: color, flowers, elegance, and a bit of drama. When you wear them, you know that you’re wearing something special. If you don’t want a lot of attention, you should save these in your jewel box for another day!

JCK Marketplace: What are your design inspirations?

LS: I live in Florida, so both sunshine and color are always prevalent in my world. I’m actually one of those people who believe that color has the ability to change your mood and make you feel happy. The walls in my kitchen are Granny Smith apple–green for this very reason. I’m always inspired by colored gemstones and diamonds, and I love rich metals. I like to add texture, movement, and the unexpected little element in each piece. I know I’m doing my job right if you can sit in a boring meeting, but feel happy inside because you’re wearing a great piece of jewelry.

JCK Marketplace: If you could give one piece of advice to jewelry retailers, what would it be?

LS: Always be pulling jewelry out of your case for your customers to try on. Sales go way up if you can connect the customer with the feel and imagery of a piece they put on. Make it fun and exciting; we all need a little joy in our world.

JCK Marketplace: And perhaps the most important question of all: What’s your happy hour drink?

LS: It depends on my mood and location, but I’m always game for a straight-up martini (three olives, please) or a glass of good pinot noir.
