UN Official Pays Tribute to Jewelry Industry

Carlos Lopes, the assistant secretary general of the United Nations and the
executive director of the UN Institute for Training and Research, paid special
tribute to the world jewelry industry for improvements in corporate
responsibility in the wake of the conflict diamond crisis more than 10 years
ago.

His comments came at the start of a two-day forum on corporate social
responsibility, part of UNITAR Week in the United Nations Pavilion at the 2010
Expo, in Shanghai, China. The jewelry industry, which is represented by CIBJO
in the UN, was selected as a role model and case study for the implementation
of corporate social responsibility by a business sector.
In his remarks, Lopes credited CIBJO for establishing the World Jewellery
Confederation Education Foundation, which educates the jewelry sector on
corporate social responsibility.
