Trip to Yellowknife diamond facilities to be auctioned for charity

Judy Richards, president of Davidson’s Jewellers and past president of the Canadian Jewellers Association, offered a trip to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, as the main auction prize at the Gold Medal Plates Event, Wed., Sept. 22. at the National Gallery. Her goal was to raise approximately $10,000 in each of four cities across Canada for the Canadian Olympic Committee Excellence Fund.

The “Adventure of a Lifetime” begins Monday, July 11, 2005, with a flight to Yellowknife, NWT where the winner will stay at the Chateau Nova, and spend the evening touring Yellowknife under the Midnight Sun.

After being fitted with safety boots, a half hour early morning flight, will take the winner 300km northeast, to Lac de Gras where you will spend a full day touring the Ekati Diamond Mine, where he or she will see open pit diamond mining, kimberlite pipes containing diamond rough, as well as the crushing and sorting plant. Also learn of the many obstacles encountered in the creation of this state of the art mine and how Canada has quickly grown to become the world’s third largest producer of diamonds.

Wednesday is a visit to the “Polar Ice” Diamond Cutting & Polishing Factory, where the winner will be able to sit at the cutters bench and take a turn at cutting a Canadian Diamond.

The winner will also receive a “Polar Ice” Canadian Diamond to take home as a memento of their adventure.
