Trend Watch: Chunky Turquoise

A perennial favorite, turquoise is once again catching the eye of fashion editors this season. What’s not to love about this affordable gemstone as an adornment as statement necklaces once again come into prominence?

The vibrancy of turquoise is perfect for sunlight-drenched days of summer and making “a bold, bohemian statement,” as suggested in the May 2008 issue of Harper’s Bazaar. The stone works with so many current trends:

  • the 60’s look reminiscent of hippie fashion;
  • the bright floral looks ranging from Liberty prints to huge, bright Prada flowers, and
  • the bold hues such as magenta and lemon yellow currently favored over basic black.

Turquoise is a stone that, in its classic color, is attractive on just about everyone of every skin color, warm or cool, dark or light. What could be more appropriate than this kind of universal wearability for a gemstone that has been valued in the diverse cultures of Native Americans, Arabs and Buddhists, among others, dating back to ancient Egypt.

This season, turquoise should be worn boldly. “Multilayered pieces are a mainstay,” says Bazaar. Turquoise mixes wonderfully with either yellow gold or white metals, although mixing the pieces should be done with care to avoid scratching the stones. Turquoise is the perfect stone for sunny days and sunny personalities.
