Trend Spotting: Black

This season there’s a blackout in jewels. JCKstyle covered the beautiful oxidized metals looks in the Fall/Winter 2007 issue (see Jennifer Heebner’s “Burned, Baby, Burned”). Continuing the trend, gemstones and other materials take center stage. From chunky beaded necklaces reminiscent of the ’50s to oversize cocktail rings to strong masculine pieces, this crop of black bijoux (in onyx, jet, glass, plastic, and wood) complements the fashion of the moment. Here, a few that make it into my Little Black Book.

  • Mark Walsh Leslie Chin’s Zinnia Flower cuff and Gingko earrings bring you closer to nature, in jet color, pearlized poured glass enamel and 18k gilt metal, at Saks
  • Rachel Leigh’s oversize Dolce Black and Vita Black hand-carved wood hearts on double chains—with black diamond Swarovski crystal pavé silver wings, and with silver border, respectively
  • Conroy & Wilcox’s 18k drusy cocktail ring packs the perfect punch
  • Jose & Maria Barrera’s statement-making necklace, cuff, and earrings in brass metal with black glass beads, in 24k yellow gold plate, at Bergdorf Goodman
  • David & Martin’s light-hearted String-of-Pearls necklace, earrings, and bracelet in silk and plastic
  • Susanna Galanis’s Black Lava collection shows its molten glow
  • Porcupine Rocks’s Bohemia collection has pieces named after iconic films, including the Roman Holiday necklace, which uses black onyx and white agate to highlight its 1930s French diamante belt buckle
  • Arena CPH’s onyx necklace, pendant necklace, and earrings have a dainty dangle appeal, at Saks
  • For men, Gurhan’s hammered palladium and oval black onyx ring with gold trim plays well with all metals, at Neiman Marcus
