This Boat Can Find Diamonds Below Sea Level

The mv SS Nujoma—billed as the world’s most advanced diamond exploration sea vessel—just began searching for diamonds in the water of Namibia yesterday.

The 12,000 ton, 113-meter long, diesel-powered vessel costs $157 million and belongs to Debmarine Namibia, a 50-50 joint venture between the Namibian government and De Beers Group.

Debmarine Namibia is the only company in the world to mine diamonds offshore.  Mining of Namibia’s diamonds takes place at around 120 to 140 meters below sea level.

The new vessel will ensure Namibia remains a diamond producer well into the future. It can sample diamonds at more than double the speed of its predecessor, a statement said.

An inauguration ceremony held yesterday attracted the company’s prime minister, Saara Kuugongelwa-AmaImage.
