If you’re looking for an easy-breezy kind of jewel, the station necklace may be it. Typically of the delicate chain variety, it’s a style that’s elegant on its own, but is often also seen layered with other thin chains. If long enough, it can even be wrapped around the neck several times—a versatile quality that allows its look to be changed based on neckline, mood, whatever.
A station necklace is exactly how it sounds: Adornments sit along a chain in stations, be they gemstones (often bezel set), beads, or even an assortment of shapes (like the starry necklace from Italian jeweler Spallanzani, below).
I always called them “diamonds by the yard” necklaces, but in an official capacity, that would be a mistake—the term is a registered trademark of Elsa Peretti, whose designs you will find at Tiffany & Co. (I mistakenly thought it was Tiffany’s itself that held the trademark.)
By the way, my colleague Amy Elliott, predicts that long, swingy station necklaces will be trending at JCK Las Vegas this year, so keep an eye out for styles much like these, with plenty of variations to boot.
