Samuelson’s Opens Northern Virginia Office

Baltimore-based fine jewelry and gem business Samuelson’s recently announced that it’s opening a third location, in bustling Tysons Corner, Va.

The third-generation family-owned jewelry business—which has been in continuous operation in Maryland since 1922—will debut a buying office in northern Virginia, just off the well-traveled Beltway highway loop. The location will be Samuelson’s first outside of Maryland and its second in the Washington, D.C., metro area. The first to open was a buying office in Chevy Chase, Md., an affluent suburb of D.C.

Company chief executive officer Ron Samuelson tells JCK that the company, which has historically been a traditional brick-and-mortar jewelry retailer, has been slowly transitioning into an appointment-only buying office model.

The decision to open a buying office in northern Virginia was the result of years of interest from consumers in the region. “We’d always get calls from the website from people in Virginia and D.C. wanting to sell their items…and they wouldn’t want to come all the way to Baltimore,” he says.

The success of the Chevy Chase office was a good signifier, says Samuelson, that interest in a northern Virginia buying office staffed with a trusted and knowledgable expert was growing.

That trusted expert will be 30-year jewelry industry veteran Allan Rosen, who will head up the new Tysons Corner office. Rosen comes to Samuelson’s directly from Philadelphia’s iconic Jewelers’ Row, where he ran his own jewelry purchasing firm. The jewelry pro, who’s moved his family down to northern Virginia for the position, specializes in diamond grading, finished jewelry evaluation, estate jewelry purchasing, gold and silver assessment, and watch appraisals.

In addition to diamonds, the office is interested in buying gold, engagement rings, watches, estate jewelry, sterling silver, coins, and bullion.

Samuelson’s in Tysons Corner is open by appointment only Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
