Oscar Fashion Doesn’t Disappoint

I take it back. After the Golden Globes, I doubted Hollywood starlets’ and stylists’ ability to figure out how to accessorize a dress with a necklace. And last night they all proved me wrong.

Like the runways in New York last week, the red carpet in Hollywood last night was all about statement necklaces. And all I can say is: HOORAY! Necklaces took the place of earrings as the go-to accessory, from major (a la Amanda Seyfried):

To demure (perfectly played by Penelope Cruz):

Meanwhile, there were diamonds aplenty, of course, but the critics’ choice kudos went to those who opted for color. My favorites? Angelina Jolie, who beautifully added a pop of green to her somber black gown.

Amy Adams, who rocked an amazing necklace (and wisely went tame on the rest of her accessories)

And Heidi Klum, who set her own trend with structured, feather-shaped earrings and a jumble of gorgeous mix-and-match bracelets.

Finally, the Oscars red carpet illustrated the major shift in the favorite silhouette of the moment. Fluidity (think drapy drop earrings and long layered necklaces) of the past few seasons resoundingly gave way to structure and architectural shapes in both bib and collar necklaces and drop earrings, like those worn by Jessica Biel, Alicia Keys, and Virginia Madsen:
