Neiman Marcus holiday sales up 15%, jewelry among top-selling items

The Neiman Marcus Group reported a 15% increase over last year’s numbers in total and comparable sales for the five-week period ended Jan. 4. Total revenue for the period was $544 million while comparable revenue was $543 million.

During the same period, comparable revenues in the Specialty Retail Stores segment, which includes Neiman Marcus Stores and Bergdorf Goodman, increased 12.6%. Revenue growth trends were the strongest in the company’s stores in the Northeast and Southeast. Jewelry was listed among the best sellers, along with fine apparel, designer handbags, women’s shoes, and men’s products.

During the same period, comparable revenue ballooned 27% at Neiman Marcus Direct, which operates catalog and online operations under the Neiman Marcus, Horchow, and Chef’s Catalog brand names. Top selling merchandise in the Direct Marketing segment again included jewelry, along with women’s contemporary sportswear, women’s shoes, and cosmetics.

For the combined nine weeks of November and December 2003, comparable revenues increased 11.4% for The Neiman Marcus Group.

Based on the current sales trends, the company said it anticipates its comparable store revenues for the second quarter of fiscal year 2004 to increase in the range of 10% to 11%.
