Marketing from the Heart

Yesterday, alongside several of my image consulting colleagues and dozens of other volunteers, I had the privilege of volunteering at “Divabetic: Makeover Your Diabetes” held at Paramount Studio in Los Angeles. Divabetic events are for women with, or at risk for, diabetes. These events, which are held at various locations around the country, provide an exciting mix of free beauty and fashion services along with one-on-one consultations with diabetes educators and registered dietitians in a festive, fun atmosphere.

Several hundred women and girls of all ages attended the free event. The huge sound stage where the event was held was decorated beautifully in bright colors with balloons, floral arrangements, colored lights and tables set up with tablecloths where the various consultations were held. A line of talented makeup artists transformed drab into dynamite. The atmosphere sizzled with positive energy.

My image consulting colleagues and I enjoyed providing demonstrations of scarf tying to dozens of women, alongside of which I had a display of my vintage brooches for sale. The scarves and brooches put smiles many a face. I also enjoyed talking to attendees about my book.

Especially as retail hits the summer season slowdown, now’s a great time to find opportunities to bring your products and services to hundreds of potential customers at any number of philanthropic and charitable events. Take out a vendor booth, if you have a product line appropriate for the event. Donate to the silent auction if you do not. Volunteer. Even better, volunteer as a company or as members of a group. Be a regular presence at community events. Without spending a penny, just by being there, you are marketing your company, even as you help others by making a positive difference in their lives.
