Long Island jewelry store manager fatally shot in robbery

A man walked into a jewelry store in upscale Long Island, N.Y., community of Glen Head, claiming he was looking for an engagement ring, but instead shot the store’s manager to death, police reportedly said.

Tom Renison, 48, was talking with the man at about 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, while his relatives were in another room at J&J Jewelry on Glen Head Road, The Associated Press reports. After browsing around the store for about 30 minutes, the unidentified man turned around and shot Renison several times in the chest.

He staggered out of the store and collapsed, and was later pronounced dead at North Shore University Hospital in Glen Cove, the AP reports.

Police reportedly said the suspect, who fled on foot, either robbed or attempted to rob the jewelry store and has not been apprehended.

“This is a very quiet area,” Detective Lt. Dennis Farrell reportedly said. “Things like those don’t usually happen up here, but unfortunately, no one is immune to this kind of act.”
