Live From Baselworld: Mattioli’s New African Queen Collection

Italian jewelry brand Mattioli unveiled a tribal-inspired jewelry collection, African Queen, this week during Baselworld 2012. Designer Licia Mattioli created an intimate assortment of about 20 dramatic-looking jet bead SKUs in 18k rose and white gold (though the firm has been getting repeated requests for yellow). Made with the Massai tribes of Kenya and Tanzania in mind, motifs include subtle lightning bolts, an homage to the erratic weather patterns in those lands, and feature jet, a fossil coal, instead of ebony wood, for durability. Suggested retail prices start at $300. According to Danny Bogue, head of U.S. sales for Mattioli, nearly every account who’s already seen the collection has ordered some.
