Jumbo Gems & Enormous Stones

Eye-popping gems are not solely the provenance of the red carpet. This season, fashion editorials and advertisements are replete with huge gemstones and other enormous design elements of all manner of materials set into rings and other jewelry as accompaniment to the latest looks:

Singer Christina Aguilera is pictured in the February 2012 issue of Marie Claire wearing a huge rock crystal ring from CC Skye with her Vionnet dress.

The February 2012 issue of O, the Oprah Magazine highlights a bright yellow ring from Kendra Scott as an example of an “acid bright” that can perk up a wardrobe. The featured link bracelet is from Ann Taylor.

The February 2012 issue of Real Simple pictures a necklace adorned with huge dangling briolettes from Colour Me, shown with a dress from Everly.

Actress Melissa McCarthy wears an enormous black drusy ring from Gerard Yosca in the January 2012 issue of Allure. Her earrings are from Erickson Beamon, gown is from Hips and Curves, and marabou feather jacket is by Adrienne Landau.

Neiman Marcus ran an ad for a necklace of sapphires and 18k gold elements with a coordinating ring from Yvel in the January 2012 issue of Town & Country.

Here’s an ad for David Yurman jewelry that ran in the January 2012 issue of Vogue, featuring a large wrapped gemstone ring.

Large design elements are the attraction in a necklace and bracelet of 20k gold and diamonds from Coomi, as pictured in this ad from the January 2012 issue of Town & Country.

A current ad for Yves Saint Laurent features a ring with an enormous black-colored stone (as described on the designer’s website).

I expect we’ll see more than a few additional specimens of enormous and spectacular gemstones at the Grammy Awards this weekend and the Academy Awards later this month. There’s no doubt that these gems merit all the attention they receive.
