Jeweled headbands and barrettes have been appearing regularly in the fashion press since last autumn in anticipation of the holiday season. Quite aside from fashion designer faux fun versions of sparkly adornment for tresses, real jewels have become a mainstay of chic hairstyles through the holidays and are an important trend this spring, showing no sign of waning.
For instance, last October, Vogue profiled eight “cool, modern girls” carrying off fine jewelry, such as model/writer/student Julia Frakes, pictured here, wearing a diamond and white gold headband from Solange Azagury-Partridge further enhanced with a Harry Winston garnet, tsavorite and diamond feather brooch. She also wears diamond and rose gold earrings from Tiffany & Co.
Here’s an ad for Harry Winston that ran in December 2011 fashion magazines, featuring matchy-matchy earrings, necklaces, rings, bracelets, and hair adornment.
Hair adornments have proved to be so popular that their presence is ongoing this spring as well. Here is a current ad for Louis Vuitton featuring a tiara; related ads feature bejeweled headbands.
One of the Louis Vuitton faux jewel headbands is featured in this beauty spread in the April 2012 issue of Lucky magazine.
Prada too features hairclips that match other items of jewelry in current ads.
One of the key influencers in the trend is Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel, which featured (glass) pearl-adorned chignons in the spring 2012 Chanel runway show to evoke an underwater theme, as if each model had just risen from the sea. According to the December 2011 issue of Allure magazine, hairstylist Sam McKnight used 800 of these pearly bobby pins in the show. The February 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar features one of the Chanel looks with faux pearl hair adornment.
Actress Rachel McAdams is pictured in the February 2012 issue of Glamour wearing a Dior dress, “pearl hairpin” from Chanel, and a diamond and platinum bracelet from Stephen Russell.
The February 2012 issue of Allure styles a model with a Stella & Dot necklace worn as a headband. She also wears pearl bracelets by David Yurman and a pearl ring by Belle Etoile. Her top and skirt are from Miu Miu and her bag is by Calvin Klein Collection.
The March 2012 issue of Marie Claire features an open-weave dress, bra and briefs from Dolce & Gabbana worn with a tiara from Simon Tu and a ring from Tacori.
Actress Emma Watson is quoted in the March 2012 issue of InStyle magazine. When asked to finish the sentence, “If I’m having a bad-hair day, I . . . ” she replied, “Put a pin in it! The more distracting, the better.” Pictured is a crystal star bobby pin from Jennifer Behr.
The March 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar reports on the season’s prettiest hairstyles and how to get them right. The most coveted accessory is what Bazaar calls a “worthy splurge”: “Chanel’s pearl-adorned bobby pins, spotted glistening atop tousled knots at the [spring 2012] show, where hairstylist Sam McKnight used them to create a ‘chic wet style.'” Pictured are a set of three Chanel metal and glass pearl hairpins. Faux jewel headbands by Zitomer are also pictured, with the note: “Slim, crystallized headbands add instant glamour to an unstructured updo. It’s a cool, not-trying-too-hard finish.”
The March 2012 issue of Vogue includes repeated examples of bejeweled hairstyles in its lead fashion spread on spring’s pervasive message of the power of positive dressing. The look above left, including all the accessories, is entirely from Miu Miu, including the crystal headband and “pearl-and-crystal” bracelets. The look above right pictures an ensemble from Marni worn with Prada shoes and headband and bracelet from Miu Miu.
The March 2012 issue of Elle is also enamored with the look of jewels in the hair, featuring a wide range of variations. In the photo above, the model wears a diamond headband from Fred Leighton and multicolor gem-studded bracelets from Lorraine Schwartz with a slipdress from Calvin Klein Collection and pumps from Nicholas Kirkwood.
In the above photo from Elle, both models wear diamond tiaras, diamond earrings, a single diamond and pearl tassel earring, and diamond brooches, all from Fred Leighton. Notice that the tiaras are worn just above the forehead and apparently upside down. Both models wear Donna Karan New York ensembles; the stockings are from Wolford and the fur-trimmed pumps from Christian Louboutin.
Finally, Elle pins a diamond cluster brooch into the model’s hair in this photo that also features a necklace and earring of sapphires and diamonds, all from Harry Winston. The wears a gown from Carolina Herrera and ostrich feather-trimmed pumps from Brian Atwood.
Tiaras, hairpins and headbands made to be worn in the hair, as well as necklaces and brooches pinned into the hair, provide all manner of gleam and sparkle to some of the chicest hair looks for spring 2012.
