Jewelry Tanks at Target, Big at Bon Ton and Saks



The jewelry category turned in a mixed performance at department stores during holiday 2011.

Target called jewelry “one of its softest performing categories” during the past holiday, along with accessories and shoes.

Overall, the company’s “comps” increased 1.6 percent during fiscal December 2011.

However, Bon Ton Stores called jewelry one its best performing businesses, along with hard home, cosmetics, children’s, and better apparel.

Overall, comparable store sales for the department store chain decreased 0.7 percent for the five weeks ended Dec. 31, 2011.

Saks Incorporated also listed fine jewelry as among its best performing categories over the holidays, along with contemporary apparel, handbags, and women’s shoes.

The company announced that comparable store sales increased 7.1 percent for November and December.
