Dear Beirut Fine Art & Jewelry Auction: Oct. 22–25

“Our primary concern was the most vulnerable communities in Beirut affected by the blast, which are the artists, LGBTQI, creatives, and migrant workers,” says jewelry designer and auction organizer Karma El Khalil. “In the areas of Mar Mikhaël and Karantina, small businesses run by creatives and the LGBTQI community exist and flourish in relative freedom and safety. Sadly, these neighborhoods encircle the port (which was the epicenter of blast), and were obliterated by the August 4th explosion. So rehabilitating these neighborhoods is crucial to the support, safety, and preservation of these communities.” (Starburst Earrings with diamonds in 18k white gold; retail value $7,700; Karma El Khalil)

Spearheaded by a group of five women living in New York with deep-rooted ties to Lebanon, including jewelry designer Karma El Khalil, Dear Beirut is a fundraising auction created to benefit the communities affected by the Aug. 4 explosion in Beirut. Top jewelry designer donors include Lydia Courteille, Stephen Webster, and Anthony Lent, among others. The proceeds will benefit to Offrejoie and Jobs for Lebanon.

A Murder Is Forever by Rob Bates

Murder Is Forever coverFall’s the perfect time to curl up with a book, and A Murder Is Forever, a new mystery novel penned by JCK news director Rob Bates ticks all the boxes for those in our industry who love their work—and a distractingly good story. As JCK‘s Emili Vesilind wrote: “The novel showcases Bates’ knack for constructing (and at JCK, distilling) gripping narratives that are free from clutter and distraction.… He says he wanted to show that the Diamond District is filled with normal people doing normal things. But he stresses the backdrop is just a jumping-off point for the novel.” You be the judge!
