Head of Saks regional department stores division resigns

Saks said Wednesday that George L. Jones resigned as president and CEO of Saks Department Store Group, the company’s regional department stores division.

Jones, 54, joined the company as chief of the regional group in 2001 and will leave Sept. 30.

Brad Martin, Saks’s chief executive, is reportedly shedding assets to concentrate on the luxury chain Saks Fifth Avenue; that chain’s collection of $20 million from vendors has led to two federal investigations. The company is selling all the stores in the regional group except for the Parisian chain.

Toni E. Browning, 48, who was chief executive of the Proffitt’s and McRae’s stores, was named yesterday to the new post of chief executive of the 41-store Parisian unit.
