Gunmen rob jewelry store and leave explosives

Two men armed with guns robbed a Sarasota, Fla., jewelry store, pistol-whipped an employee, and left behind an explosive device, prompting the Sheriff’s Office to evacuate several businesses in a shopping center, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports.

The robbery occurred Monday morning at Diamond Vault at The Landings shopping center, the newspaper reports.

A Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office bomb robot detonated a package discovered near the store’s back door, the newspaper reports.

The Sheriff’s Office told the newspaper the robbers wore blue workers’ uniforms and covered their faces with dust masks. The jewelry store employee, whose name was not released, was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital and later released.
