Golconda Diamonds Set Record at Christie’s

The Imperial Cushions, a pair of cushion-cut
diamond ear pendants with diamonds from the Golconda mines, set a new
price-per-carat
world record for colorless Golconda stones at Christie’s Hong Kong
Magnificent
Jewels sale May 31.

The 23.49- and
23.11-carat stones, each D and potentially flawless, fetched $9.29
million, or
$200,000 per carat, a new record. The pre-sale estimate was $7 million
to $9
million.

The sale itself
brought in $89.5 million, with 80 percent sold by lot and 89 percent
sold by

“With $110 million
changing hands in two days, we have just concluded our best season for
jewelry
and watches in Asia,” said Vickie Sek, director of the jewelry and
jadeite
