Growing up by the ocean instilled in Londoner Ruth Tomlinson both a passion for treasure (think pirates) and a healthy respect for sea life. To wit, she brings to life Lilliputian footprints and imperfections in gold by way of crustacean-like formations clutching stones and families of granulated beads as well as some impregnated with diamonds and sapphires. “I am driven by…the magic of minutiae, tiny intricacies, small imperfections, and the individual’s search for preciousness,” she explains. Tomlinson has been crafting jewelry for private clients since 2001 but debuted a signature line in 2013. She has studied 3-D design and secured a master’s degree in goldsmithing, silversmithing, metalwork, and jewellery at London’s Royal College of Art and is now casting and fabricating finished pieces in the U.K. Diamonds and sapphires are her stones of choice, and she has won five prestigious design awards to date, including the Coutts New Jewellers Award in 2009.
