Five jewelry retailers among top specialty stores

Specialty stores are gaining a wider market share, making them a major force in retailing, according to the 2005 Top 100 Specialty Retailers ranking, published in the August issue of STORES magazine. And jewelry retailers managed to take five spots on this year’s survey.

Coming in at 27th is Berkshire-Hathaway Retail, which owns Kansas City-based Helzberg Diamonds and Borsheim’s, Omaha, Neb. Zale appeared 30th on the list, followed by Tiffany (32) and Sterling Jewelers (34). Also making on the list is Claire’s Stores (61), which sells costume jewelry.

“With so many choices, people are able to be selective about where they spend their money,” said Rick Gallagher, STORES publisher and NRF vice president. “Specialty stores are attracting a large number of customers because they are able to provide the consumer with deep product assortments, experienced sales staff and high customer service levels.”

The top five retailers in the survey are Best Buy, Gap, Staples, Office Depot, and OfficeMax.

STORES is the monthly magazine of the National Retail Federation. The Top 100 Specialty Retailers is sponsored Alliance Data Systems.
