Eventful: Marco Bicego

It’s 30 degrees in New York today, with 5” of snow en route: Who wouldn’t want to be in Aruba? And when in Aruba, who wouldn’t want to check out the jewels? Well, Monica Daryanani, owner and director of Jewels and Gems, understands this, and on Valentine’s Day, treated her customers to a trunk show of Marco Bicego jewelry.

Founded in 2000 by its namesake, Marco Bicego is a young company with an old soul. Bicego learned his craft in Veneto, Italy, under his father’s tutelage. The line is rooted in traditional Italian artistry, but injected with a contemporary flair. “Everyday luxury” is its mantra, and that’s a perfect fit for the Jewels and Gems client: 90 percent hailing from the United States, Daryanani says “she is the Neiman Marcus/Saks customer who likes design, style, and luxury.”

Daryanani organized a casual (to match the Island vibe) but classy (to match her customers’ tastes) in-store Valentine’s Day presentation from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. She ran newspapers ads and sent invitations to local customers as well as customers staying in hotels; two cruise ships, the Summit and Volendam, were also in. With champagne and hundreds of roses on hand, how could you go wrong?

Best of all, Daryanani endorses the line in her personal style selections—”My favorite collection right now is the Confetti collection, which I wear every day, and I have literally had customers buy pieces I wear off my neck!”—and as such, she doubled as a model during the event. Below, she and Amy Bodner, Marco Bicego’s sales representative, both chose rich yellow gold to complement bright outfits.

But color is also a Bicego signature…and perfect for the pulse of spring ‘08 fashion. So have an all-out color war, pairing Bicego’s multicolor semiprecious stones with a Lisa Perry shift, or let the jewelry punch up the season’s neutrals. Either way, it’s a nice counterpart.

Marco Bicego’s Paradise collection is a best-seller at Jewels and Gems, Aruba. This five-strand necklace is hand engraved in 18k, with semi-precious stones.

Daryanani also appreciates Bicego’s versatility: “He is a genius in terms of jewelry design—his pieces work if you’re wearing jeans and a classic white shirt or you are wearing black tie.” I like the textures, the way the stones seem to dance, and that the design simultaneously achieves both symmetry and incongruity.
