Douglas Schubot, who owned prominent Michigan jeweler Jules R. Schubot, died Jan. 18 in Delray Beach, Fla., according to an obituary posted on Legacy.com. He was 87.
In 1970, Schubot took over the store founded by his father in 1917, Jules R. Schubot Jewellers, eventually moving it from Detroit to Troy, Mich. Schubot became known as one of the Midwest’s preeminent jewelers, renowned for his exclusive clientele.
“If it isn’t the best quality jewelry that evokes elegance, we won’t sell it and vendors know this,” he told Instore. “We’re very discerning and so are our customers.”
Schubot was also as an active philanthropist, supporting causes ranging from breast cancer research to Israel bonds.
In 2009, the store filed for Chapter 11 and eventually liquidated.
He is survived by Sydell, his wife of 53 years; children Julie, Ronald, and Brian; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
