Dogeared’s Marcia Maizel-Clarke Talks Sex and the City Jewelry

The next Sex and the City movie debuts in May 2010, and soon you’ll be able to buy suitable jewelry to wear on opening day. Thanks to a deal struck by HBO and Dogeared Jewels & Gifts, the Los Angeles-based firm has licensed the brand to create an affordable and chic line of jewelry.

Sex and the City girls

The Sex and the City line of jewelry features charms that represent iconic themes from the award-winning HBO series, including a diamond, a stiletto, and the Eiffel Tower. The necklaces will be presented on cards printed with the New York City skyline and some of the four main characters’ most memorable lines, including:

* “Single & fabulous”
* “I’ve been dating since I was 15. I’m exhausted! Where is he?”
* “Shopping is my cardio”
* “Hopeless romantic”

Dogeared’s founder, Marcia Maizel-Clarke, told the press: “We are huge fans of The Sex and the City series and are delighted to have the opportunity to develop this collection. Our design team was inspired by the distinct characteristics of each of the four characters–Samantha, Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda.”

The Sex and the City jewelry was on display at some the winter jewelry trade shows, including the New York International Gift Fair. Beginning this spring, the necklaces will be available at the HBO Shop in New York City and online at www.hbo.com, as well as at select retailers listed on Dogeared’s website. Retail prices will range from $55 – $200, and each piece will be wrapped in a black and pink satin pouch.

“Our strength is creating themed product concepts,” says Maizel-Clarke. “Given our fashion orientation, we believe we have brought the correct tone and point of view to this licensed line.”

Maizel-Clarke answered a few more questions about the line in an email interview with JCK.

JCK: How did you land this assignment to create a Sex and the City line for HBO?
Maizel-Clarke: HBO sought out Dogeared because of the strength of our product and our message. [HBO] saw us as a successful potential partner because of our retail presence and reputation for quality product in the marketplace. Dogeared’s core strength is in reaching women who buy jewelry for themselves and all the celebrations in their lives. Sex and the City felt like a natural extension of what we do.

JCK: How many different styles/looks are in the line?
Maizel-Clarke: There are eight concept cards in both sterling and gold dipped so there is a total of 16 necklaces, plus one long multi-charm necklace that comes in both sterling and 14k gold dipped. The concepts are so great, as they are all some of the great quotes from the movie.

JCK: Does the jewelry feature only necklaces or other items-bracelets, ring, etc?
Maizel-Clarke: There are just necklaces, one of our key categories of business

JCK: Which piece is your favorite and why?
Maizel-Clarke: I have to be honest–I love all of them and could easily wear or gift any of them to my friends. (In fact, they are all waiting to get their hands on the necklaces!!) If I had to pick, it would be the long multi-charm necklace; it has the Eiffel tower, heart, high heel, and pearl dangle. I just got back from one of my favorite cities, Paris (I am a hopeless romantic), I am in love with love, shoes are my obsession, and pearls represent simplicity and the beauty of nature to me, so this necklace makes me very happy!
