Design Piracy is the topic of a June conference

“Design Piracy: Protecting Your Product” is the focus of a special one-day executive-level conference slated to be held June 14 at the Harvard Club in New York City.

The conference is a legal and business primer for retail and manufacturing executives who need solutions for fighting design knockoffs, copyright, patent, or any other intellectual property infringement.

The conference is being presented by American Lawyer Media, in conjunction with Reed Business Information, the parent company of JCK magazine. Other RBI magazines participating are Home Textiles Today, Gifts & Decorative Accessories, Playthings, and TWICE (This Week in Consumer Electronics). Other participants include Corporate Counsel and IP Law and Business magazines, and ALM events. JCK Editor-in-Chief Hedda Schupak will chair a panel discussion about implications of and successfully stopping knockoffs. Panelists include Kathrine Baumann, CEO of Kathrine Baumann Beverly Hills, a designer who has successfully won several lawsuits against counterfeiters, and Brian Monks, director of anti-counterfeiting operations for Underwriters Laboratories of Melville, N.Y.

Other topics on the agenda include: What executives need to know about anti-counterfeiting laws, practical aspects of protecting intellectual property, pro-actively protecting designs and brands, how to win and not lose a trade-dress infringement case, business dynamics of fighting counterfeiting from overseas manufacturers, and protecting your company’s product on the Internet.

The keynote address will be “The Reluctant Detective: One Company’s Battle to Protect Their Product,” presented by Carolyn Hoberman, executive vice president of Hoberman Designs Inc., New York.

Registration fee for the full-day event, which includes lunch and a cocktail reception at the close of the event, is $695 per person or $595 per person for three or more attendees from a single firm. Legal practitioners will receive Continuing Legal Education credit (CLE) for attending.
