Advanced Geometry Lessons in Jewelry

Some of the sharpest designs in jewelry this season incorporate points, angles, and lines that a mathematician could love. Geometric design elements appear in all manner of jewelry, including necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. These styles are often matched with bright metallic fabrics, shoes, and bags. At other times, they play off the graphic patterns so popular this season.

The March 2012 issue of Lucky magazine finds geometric designs futuristic: “Out-of-this-world sparkle, sharp geometry and intergalactic metallics conjure up a very sophisticated take on Barbarella.” The jewelry featured is the crystal “Rocket” necklace from Swarovski (“Wear this solo or mix with plain silver chains”); a bangle bracelet set from Gemma Redux (“Daring, dramatic and structured, this is the anti-friendship bracelet”); and a lizard and rhodium cuff from Kara by Kara Ross (“Silver animal skin: so very luxe”).

Geometric designs of jewelry are combined with silver metallic finishes in the March 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar. The jewelry pictured is a choker necklace from Anndra Neen, a wide wristwatch from Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquiere, and an elaborately complex ring from Hermes.

The mix of metallic fabrics and geometric jewelry designs is similarly highlighted in the March 2012 issue of InStyle. The jewelry pictured is a set of metal and enamel bangles from White House Black Market and a brass cutout pendant necklace from Caja.

The March 2012 issue of InStyle also features a number of celebrities sporting statement necklaces with geometric elements and comments: “These angular, oversize necklaces reflect an eclectic mix. Rough-hewn textures, glossy surfaces, and painterly touches give them the look of DIY projects that hold the mystical power of artifacts. The diverse influences make them conversation pieces, and you don’t have to utter a single word.” Zoe Saldana wears Lanvin, Heidi Klum wears a piece from her line Wildlife by Heidi Klum, Audrey Tautou is in Marni, Mandy Moore is in Lela Rose, and Nicole Richie wears a necklace from her line, House of Harlow 1960.

Among the items anointed “This month’s objects of desire” in the March 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar are geometric designs in jewelry: a statement necklace from Lanvin, pointy gem-encrusted earrings from House of Waris, and a wide cuff bracelet from Vionnet.

The February 2012 issue of Real Simple calls “mod geometry” “the most wearable trend right now.” Real Simple looks to the graphic prints that are popular as well as multidimensional accessories such as octagonal bangle bracelets from Cheap Monday.

Here’s a six-sided bracelet form Celine featured in the April 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar.

The April issue of Bazaar also features architectural cuffs from Pierre Hardy.

The March 2012 issue of Vogue features a geometric cuff from Eddie Borgo.

A multi-page ad for John Frieda hair care appearing in the March 2012 issue of Vogue accents the looks shown with geometric jewelry, such as the statement necklace and cuffs shown with a hairstyle that features long straight bangs.

A current ad for Cover Girl cosmetics pictures actress Sofia Vergara wearing triangular earrings.

Here’s a look from the March 2012 issue of Vogue that combines a dress adorned with mosaic tile appliqués and a clutch “swirling with Navajo-inspired prints,” both from Dior, with a long strand of chunky beads from Cara Croninger. Accented with long gloves from LaCrasia in an unexpected green hue and red ankle-strap sandals from Marni, the overall look is not only compellingly eye-catching but also intellectually interesting, rather like a good geometry problem.
