Charmed, I’m Sure

One trend with longevity is unquestionably charming – the continuing delight found in accumulations of charms worn as a miniature collections of objects of art. Like scouting badges on a sash or program icons filling up a computer screen, collections of small objects never cease to delight. For the wearer, there may be a sense of accomplishment in the accumulation, or a shorthand reference to sentimental memories, or maybe nothing more than an aesthetically pleasing grouping of items or designs that makes the wearer smile. For the viewer, there are hints of wonderful stories, clues to the personality of the wearer to be explored.



Charm bracelets have had a long tradition of being cherished, and the trend continues this summer.  The June/July 2010 issue of Harper’s Bazaar decrees that charm bracelets are once again  “in,” focusing on “Personalized extras.” The bracelet illustrating the trend is by Monica Rich Kosann.



A gold-plated coin bracelet from Ben-Amun by Isaac Manevitz is featured in the August 2010 issue of InStyle.



Coins as charms also appear in a necklace from Tory Burch shown in the August 2010 issue of Lucky.



The July 2010 issue of InStyle magazine features “gold necklaces with charms” from Melissa Joy Manning on actress Cameron Diaz.



Indeed, collections of charms or small pendants worn together on a chain have created a new term in the vernacular – the “charm necklace.”Thus, the August 2010 issue of Lucky magazine features a charm necklace with three charms by Waxing Poetic.



Actress Grace Gummer is shown wearing a collection of necklaces in the August 2010 issue of Glamour magazine—a multi-chain necklace from Janis by Janis Savitt, a blue pendant necklace from Camilla Dietz Bergeron, and a set of charm necklaces by Bjorg. She also wears bracelets in gold by Sandy Leong Jewelry and in silver by Janis by Janis Savitt.



The July issue of Glamour features a pair of charm necklaces from Sequin, noting that Veronica Etro, the designer profiled in the article made one of the necklaces out of vintage charms.


Indeed, part of the joy of charms is building upon a collection with something new.  This season, the charm necklace is a fresh way to display and enjoy a personalized, and therefore very charming, collection of charms.
