Court Appointed Special Advocates, Inc., a 26-year-old not-for-profit organization, will host a “house Party” charity event Oct. 4, 7:30 p.m., at 50 Gansevoort St. in the Meatpacking District.
CASA recruits, trains and supervises volunteers to advocate on behalf of abused and neglected children in foster care in New York City to move them quickly through the system and into safe, permanent homes. CASA is supported by many individuals in the jewelry and luxury industry, including Russell Kwiat of Kwiat Diamonds, who serves on the CASA Junior Board.
This time of year most children are focused on their Halloween costumes, but in New York City there are more than 17,000 children living in foster care don’t know where they’ll be living on Halloween. Children in New York stay in foster care longer than almost anywhere else in the country. Since 1999, the average length of stay for a child in foster care in the city has been greater than 45 months. Nationally, the average length of stay is 29 months.
