Branching Out Beyond the Fur Coat

Just as the air starts to turn a bit chilly, even the first September breeze, when thoughts of rabbit and mink are still a few months away for most people, I pull my fur out of storage. First it’s just a small collar, then a scarf, and finally when the temperature really drops, I pull out the full-on coat.

Fur has always been a winter staple, but this season’s pre-fall trend of small touches on sleeves, bags, and pockets is making it more wearable than ever and extending its seasonal shelf life. While a coat might only be wearable for a couple of months, a fur bag, like this Céline piece, can make it an entire season. Besides, who doesn’t love to add a little fur collar to their outfit as a chic final touch?

Here are a few of the most versatile pieces from pre-fall.

This vest from The Row can be worn so many ways: a leather jacket under says downtown-tough; a chunky, cable knit sweater creates a nice play on texture; and a simple cashmere coat telegraphs a ladylike sophistication.

Narciso Rodriguez and Louis Vuitton showed great, unconventional, and more subtle uses of fur. Narciso’s leather coats were some of the coolest of the season and the color-blocked fur sleeves somehow feel subtle when paired with crisp white and brown.

On the flip side, this Vuitton coat has a sweetness to it, but also a progressive edge with the extra pouf of fur.

Season after season, Marni makes beautiful, long fur gloves—an incredibly versatile wardrobe staple. It’s one of the easiest ways to add texture and color to a look. And for those craving a bit of a throwback, the stole, tail-and-all, makes quite a statement.
