Big Honkin’ Emerald Found in N.C.

A rough emerald dug from a farm in Hiddenite, N.C., has been cut into a 65.00
ct. gem called the Carolina Emperor, The Associated Press reported. Terry
Ledford found the emerald rough, which weighed around 325 cts.

The AP quoted gemologist Cap Beesley saying it’s the largest cut emerald ever
found in North America. It’s being compared to an emerald worn by Russian
Empress Catherine the Great in a brooch.
