Antwerp Sends Mission to Zimbabwe

An Antwerp World Diamond Center–sponsored fact-finding mission recently visited Zimbabwe to help develop the country’s diamond industry.

AWDC is the umbrella organization for the city’s gem trade.

The visit was prompted by the stalemate at the Plenary Session of the Kimberley Process in November, which did not produce an agreement covering the export of rough diamonds from Zimbabwe’s Marange region.

AWDC felt that Antwerp’s expertise in infrastructure and policy issues could help resolve outstanding issues. The mission to Zimbabwe is being undertaken in full compliance with current EU restrictive measures on the country.

The mission is comprised of a multi-disciplinary team, including diamantaires, insurance, shipping and technology specialists, bankers, and other experts.
