A Chain Unbroken: The Continuing Popularity of Chunky Link Jewelry

As the warm weather arrives, typically jewelry gets smaller and lighter to match the lighter-weight fashions of the season. This summer, however, the trend toward heavy chain links continues unabated, as this selection of recent styles attests. Some of the choices are traditional designs in metal, but others use unexpected materials such as leather or plastic or brightly colored gemstones to lighten the look:

In the June-July 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, a chunky bracelet from Ann Dexter-Jones Design is featured prominently in a kaleidoscope layout as a repeated pattern. Other jewelry featured in this focus on the color bordeaux includes a statement necklace from Auden, a Vhernier ring, and earrings from Marco Bicego.

Among the rock-inspired looks in the June 2012 issue of Glamour is a top and skirt from Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquière worn with a pair of chunky chain necklaces, one from Trash and Vaudeville and one from Rebecca Minkoff. With the model is Tara Ferry, son of musician Bryan Ferry.

A current ad for Gucci features a Horsebit Collection bracelet in 18kt gold.

A current ad for Banana Republic accents a white skirt suit and striped camisole with a double-strand of chunky links.

The May 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar focuses on professional wear in a fashion spread entitled “The Best of What’s New.” A Verdura necklace is pictured adorning a black top and tweed pants from Giorgio Armani, shown with a red belt from Hermès and red gloves from Sermoneta Gloves.

The same classic Verdura necklace is shown throughout the fashion spread. Here is a second photo that pictures the necklace worn with a dress form Bottega Veneta, pumps from Bally and gloves from LaCrasia Gloves.

The May 2012 issue of InStyle features 18k rose gold Pom Pom bracelets from Pomellato studded with emerald; aquamarine; purple, blue, and pink sapphire; and red spinel.

Colorful chain link necklaces aren’t just available in colored gemstones. From the May 2012 issue of Glamour comes a selection of link necklaces in plastic from R.J. Graziano, Kenneth Cole New York, and Joan Rivers for QVC.

R&B singer Jessie J is pictured in the May 2012 issue of Elle wearing a swimsuit and jacket from Marios Schwab accessorized with a chunky chain-style necklace from Natalia Brilli. The necklace is made of leather.

Here’s a May 2012 ad for Diane von Furstenberg, which includes a chunky chain link bracelet.

The back cover of the Mary 2012 issue of Vogue pictures an ad from Ralph Lauren Fine Jewelry for its double-wrap chunky chain ID bracelet, available for personalization.
