16.9 Ct. Diamond Ring Sells for $1.8M at Bonhams’ Sale

A 16.9 ct. diamond ring sold for $1.8 million at Bonhams’ Fine Jewelry sale in New York Sept. 19.

The design of the Superb Diamond Ring, though stunning, is secondary to the quality of its center stone—which is GIA-certified as being a D color, Internally Flawless diamond classified as Type IIa (meaning it’s chemically very pure).

“This is one of the finest examples of a diamond there is, given its rarity, color, cut, clarity, and transparency,” said Susan Abeles, head of jewelry for Bonhams US, in a statement. “It was admired widely during our previews in New York, L.A., Geneva, and Hong Kong, and the diamond is extraordinarily charming.”

The step-cut diamond ring was sold to a private U.S. buyer.

The auction’s top-earning lots also included a sapphire-and-diamond ring by Stephen Russell, featuring a 5.33 ct. cabochon-cut sapphire framed in old European-cut diamonds that fetched $235,000 from an online buyer—and an emerald and fancy colored diamond ring featuring an oval-shape modified brilliant-cut 7 ct. emerald that garnered $235,000.
