Confetti

Confetti is an essential element of many a New Year’s celebration, leaving playful evidence of jubilation in its wake. Just in time for the New Year and with an eye toward spring, fashion is referencing the delightful exuberance of confetti. The use of multiple colors in small bits scattered lavishly across a design is an effect is seen both in the prints on fabrics used in apparel and accessories, as well as in embellishments. Sparkly, reflective materials pick up the colors around them to enhance the color-spattered effect.

Here, for instance, is a selection of sequined jackets from the November 2010 issue of InStyle magazine.

The November 2010 issue of Town & Country shows sequins for day or night wear, including these wardrobe selections. The bib necklace shown to the left is by Nicole Whisenhunt.

Not all confetti designs are as flashy as the metallic versions. The December 2010 issue of Lucky magazine features a Catherine Malandrino silk chiffon dress in a “confetti-like print [that] is pure fun” worn with bangles of crystal-detail gunmetal and sterling silver by CC Skye.

Anne Hathaway, shown with Jake Gyllenhaal promoting their new movie Love & Other Drugs in Sydney Australia, wears a celestial-print dress and what appears to be gem-encrusted bangles, both of which carry on the confetti theme, as seen in the December 20, 2010 issue of People.

In its January 2011 issue, Elle magazine features a skirt rendered in a “wild paint-splatter print” from the label Heliz.

The October 2010 issue of Lucky features a fall 2010 collection by the design house Cacharel featuring a more subdued two-tone confetti print.

The December 2010 issue of Elle references spring’s confetti prints and accessories, including a multi-color pearl and gemstone bracelet by Marco Bicego, witty gem-studded earrings by Lorenz Baumer, and a bracelet by Bulgari set with fancy color sapphires.

As seen in the Elle photo spread, gemstone jewelry lends itself beautifully to the confetti design motif. Current ads for M.C.L by Matthew Campbell Laurenza’s the Dream Dust collection display bracelets adorned with vivid sapphires.

A butterfly pendant and ring shown in current ads for Le Vian incorporate brightly colored gemstones that are scattered across the designs.

The January 2011 issue of O, the Oprah Magazine highlights, among other choices, a multicolor sapphire ring from M.C.L. by Matthew Campbell Laurenza, as well as a gold-plated ring set with a sparkling drusy from Marcia Moran.

The December 2010 issue of O, the Oprah Magazine features these earrings set with multicolor Austrian crystals from Amrita Singh.

Even wristwatches are in on the fun. This Crazy Carats timepiece from Fendi, featured in the December 2010 issue of Elle, has a wheel of gemstones with three rotatable settings: sapphires, diamonds, and multicolor topaz.

Enjoy the wonderful exuberance of these playful confetti-inspired designs!  Happy New Year!
