Jeweler Acquitted on Fencing Charges

A California jeweler charged with knowingly buying stolen merchandise has been acquitted of the two most serious charges against him, according to local news sources.

According to the New Times, William Roger McBurney of San Luis Obispo, Calif.–based jeweler All That Glitters, allegedly paid $204 for a stolen diamond worth $20,000, and $132 for a stolen piece of sapphire jewelry valued at $3,000.

But the jury reportedly found that there was not enough evidence McBurney knew the items were stolen, and found McBurney not guilty of two felony counts of receiving stolen property. He was reportedly found guilty of one charge of delaying a police investigation, a misdemeanor, since he allegedly initially denied buying the items.

The San Luis Obispo District Attorney’s office did not return a call from JCK.
