Zimbabwe Diamond Issue Not Settled: WDC

The World Diamond Council has issued a statement denying published
reports
that diamond exports from the Marange region of Zimbabwe can resume
under the Kimberley Process.

The statement noted that while member governments have agreed
to a plan
that would allow exports to commence, authorities in Zimbabwe
still need to consult with KP chairman Mathieu Yamba.

“We believe
these consultations are sensitive and ongoing,” the WDC statement said. “Mr.
Yamba has called for understanding and patience as efforts are
made, in good faith, on all sides to reach a conclusion.”

The
WDC statement said it advises “members of the diamond industry that, until
a conclusion is reached, exports of stocks and production from the approved
concessions in Marange do not carry the approval of the Kimberley
Process.”

“We,
therefore, advocate caution and the adoption of due diligence when
trading rough diamonds on the international market,” it concluded.
