USA PATRIOT Act workshop to be held in L.A.

US Dept of Treasury Senior Policy Advisor William Langford will deliver the keynote address at the USA PATRIOT Act Workshop, being held May 4, 9:30 a.m. – noon at the, Millenium Biltmore Hotel, 506 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, Roman Room.

The Act mandates most businesses in the jewelry industry to institute anti-money laundering programs to detect and prevent exploitation by those with criminal intent. This workshop is designed to help the jewelry industry understand what is expected and how to comply. Final USA PATRIOT Act rulings are scheduled to be published by the US Treasury Department this year, after which there will be a period of three to six months for companies to come into compliance.

Panelists, in addition to Langford, are Cecilia L. Gardner, executive director and general counsel, Jewelers Vigilance Committee; and Dione D. Kenyon, president, The Jewelers Board of Trade. The panel moderator is James Marquart, President, Manufacturing Jewelers and Suppliers of America.

Attendees will receive information on resources being published to facilitate compliance with this new legislation.

The workshop is being presented by JVC, JBT, the California Jewelers Association, and the MJSA. It is being sponsored by Jewelers Mutual Insurance and Bank of America Precious Metals.
