Rocks & Stars: The Best of the 2016 Red Carpet

Gugu Mbatha-Raw

It may have been February, but the Concussion actress breezed into the NAACP Image Awards like a ray of summery sunshine. While her cutout Narciso Rodriguez gown was definitely daring, the marigold shade dialed up the sweetness factor. And the yellow gold and turquoise jewelry (courtesy of California girl Irene Neuwirth) provided a playful—and colorful—contrast.

Emmy Rossum

You can rarely go wrong with a classic red dress on the red carpet. For proof, look no further than Emmy Rossum and her strapless, figure-hugging Armani Privé gown at the Golden Globes. And if there’s anything more classic than a red gown (and red lip), it’s diamonds. On a night when many actresses were woefully bare-necked, the Shameless star pulled out the stops with a sleek diamond statement necklace—putting all those other jewelry-fearing stars to, well, shame.

Alicia Vikander

The Danish Girl star glittered in Louis Vuitton couture and jewels all throughout awards season—she is, after all, the new face of the French fashion house—but never quite so much (or so literally!) as at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The Nicolas Ghesquière custom colorblock column gown was sequined perfection, and her white gold and diamond ring and earrings—each boasting just a hint of color—were delicate but dazzling.

Selena Gomez

After showing her sexier side on her new album, Revival, Gomez continued the trend at the Grammys with a low-cut, open-backed sapphire-hued gown. The slinky, sequined style—designed for the former Disney star by Calvin Klein’s Francisco Costa—didn’t need much added adornment, so Gomez stuck to hoop earrings and a single eye-catching cocktail ring. To quote one of her recent singles, good for you!

Jessica Chastain

Proving there’s nothing more stunning than a redhead in emerald green, Jessica Chastain kicked off the 2016 awards season in style at January’s National Board of Review gala. The actress, on hand to support her movie The Martian, was glamorous in a slit-sleeved satin Carl Kapp gown with a draped Grecian-esque bodice. Jewels from her go-to brand, Piaget—including swingy diamond drop earrings—completed her unfussy but polished look.
