From Mine to Store: Coomi’s 20.73 Carat Conch Pearl Earrings

Leave it to Coomi Bhasin to create flowery earrings in girly pink hues that feel as grown-up as a Cartier timepiece. The Mumbai-born designer, whose Coomi line is known for its innovative use of texture and nature-inspired motifs, married an uncommon trio of materials—conch pearls, diamonds, and pink sapphires—in these magnificent drop earrings. “Every spring and summer, I spend my free time in my garden and just admire the beauty, colors, and intoxicating smells of the flowers,” says Bhasin. But it was the rosy-peach conch pearl and hot pink sapphire hues that initially fired up her imagination. “The shades are so vibrant with life,” she says. “I have been obsessed with working with conch pearls since my vacation with my family to Belize a few years ago. I translated my joyous memories with my family—as well as my love of nature—into these.”

Pretty in Pink

These 2-inch-long white gold knockouts, which Bhasin says aren’t representative of any single flower, feature 20.73 cts. t.w. conch pearls, 0.24 ct. t.w. diamonds, and 0.74 ct. pink sapphires.

Singular Sensations

It took five months to fabricate the earrings, which were made in a Hong Kong atelier by a trio of specialized craftsmen: a stone cutter, a metalsmith, and a stone setter. The one-of-a-kind earrings will be sold as part of her fall collection, bearing a price tag of $59,000.

Natural Beauty

The designer credits the natural world with inspiring her bold pieces. “My ideas always come to me at the most unexpected moments,” she says. “After a rafting trip on the Ganges River once, I was exhausted and relaxing on the bank, listening to the sounds of temple bells, chanting mystics, and children laughing and playing on the rocks. I felt my whole being illuminated by the sheer visual poetry. The freedom of design—mixed with cultural influences and being in the moment—are what I love most about this craft.”
