The romantic (and largely traditional) gowns on the Golden Globes’ red carpet didn’t require celebrities and their stylists to use much brain power in choosing the accompanying jewels. The swingy drop silhouette seems to be the favorite of starlets for yet another season of awards shows. Most commonly paired with a bare neck (yes, again), linear drops did show some minor updates for this year—like an infusion of color or a shoulder-dusting length.

Short and Sassy

Let’s hear a cheer for celebrities who—for better or worse—had the guts to step away from the ubiquitous chandelier and its cousin, the linear drop. Not that these trends don’t have a long shelf life left at retail; it’s just that fashion needs an infusion of freshness every now and then. At the Golden Globes, several actresses (including, notably, A-listers like Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett) opted for studs; buttonlike shapes; and tiny, delicate drop earrings.
